A Letter to Mamas on Self Care: Part 1

yellow bird self care letter to moms

I know we have a wide variety of readers! Thank you for reading! But today, I would like to specifically encourage all the moms out there (but these truths do apply to everyone! So feel free to read on too :) and learn how you can love and support the moms in your life). This is the first letter in a 3 part series all about the importance of self care and how to implement small changes that make a big difference.

At the end of each letter is an action item-- something YOU can practice. I thought breaking this up into parts would help everyone have time to implement these little, but oh so essential, changes!

Dear Mama,

I want you to know that YOU matter. Not just as a mom who takes care of your babies (big or little). Not just as a provider (both physically and emotionally). Not just as a friend to others. Not just as a shoulder for others to lean on.

You matter, all alone, as a person. You were made ON purpose (with all your beautiful features and characteristics) with a purpose. You have beautiful gifts and a unique way of seeing things and loving others. Mama, YOU MATTER.

You are more than just body. You are more than just your mind. You are a mind, a body, and a spirit and taking care of yourself (so that you can do the good work that is before you, specifically for you!) means taking care of your mind, your body, and your spirit.

I know how hard it is to try and carve out just a couple minutes for yourself! Someone always needs something from you! (especially when your life is full of littles!) But we have all heard it, and it is true, “You can’t pour from an empty cup”. So here are a few ways that I have learned (and am learning!!) to “fill my cup” and take care of my MIND, my BODY, and my SPIRIT.

Take care of your MIND- What do you LOVE to think about ? What kind of problems do you LIKE to solve? For some, it could be solving a decor issue-- what would make this space look more cozy? How can I put this gorgeous bowl from Spain on display? Or practicing a beautiful piece of music on the cello.  Or maybe you just love to read and escape into a beautiful story. (I totally get that! ) or maybe a math problem that you can take apart and solve! Or reading up on the latest trends with brain research. Or learning why BitCoin will or will not be the currency of the future. Maybe its planning a trip for your 25 year anniversary in Ireland…. Whatever it is, make time (SCHEDULE TIME) to think, solve, plan, build, read! The time you can spend solving problems YOU are gifted at is EMPOWERING! (I love to read and write business plans. And paint. And think of ways to build houses that can float during a flood. Doing these things empowers me!)

Action: Schedule one evening this week (maybe after bedtime for one hour, or sunday afternoon) when you can solve a problem/think/read. Pro tip: Put aside the tools ahead of time that you’ll need so that when your hour/afternoon starts you can DIVE IN!
